St David's Food and Craft Festival 2012

The festival is a well established annual event and one of the highlights of Saundersfoot’s calendar. Last year there were over 7,000 visitors to the event with the main stalls located in a heated covered marquee. (Anyone interested in having a stall or would like more information about the event should contact Phil Odley on 07967002467).

The festival also incorporates the Cawl Cooking Championship of the World and Elsewhere when restaurants compete to find the best dish of Cawl. Around 400 people take part in the judging of this iconic Welsh Dish and vote for the champion.

There will be a demonstration by a celebrity chef in the cookery area who will be showing how to prepare and serve some Welsh themed culinary delights.

And the festival certainly put a spring in the step of Saundersfoot, bringing in an influx of extra trade on what would normally be a quiet pre-season weekend.

Music from local duo Sandalwood added to the relaxed atmosphere of the event, while inside the festival marquee, more than 25 stallholders enjoyed brisk bsuiness.

"We've sold over 1,000 items throughout the weekend, and picked up a number of enquiries from the trade, so it's been really good," said Andy Eastwood of Yerbeston Gate Farm Shop.

And baker Manon Rees ofSiwgr Eisin, Narberth, had a busy time coping with demand from the patriotic public for Welsh cakes and St David's Day-themed cupcakes. "I've really enjoyed the festival, and it would be even better if it was a three-day event," she said.

Adding to the Welsh flavour was top chef Angela Gray, who cooked and shared some traditional tastes, including new season lamb, leek and potato pasties and Patagonian Black Cake.

Everybody's been happy, and the weekend just couldn't have gone better, said Phil Odley, chairman of Saundersfoot Chamber for Tourism, which organised the event.

"People have come down from all over Pembrokeshire and beyond, and it's been wonderful to see everyone sitting out in the sun outside the marquee and the pubs."

*The festival's cawl trail was more popular than ever this year, and with 350 people taking part, some of the 10 eating establishments ran out of the traditional Welsh delicacy.

Judged on the taste-test of the visitors, this year's winner of the Cawl Cooking Championships of the World...and Elsewhere, was The Mulberry, which was delighted to secure victory after last year's runner-up slot.

In second place was The Old Chemist Inn, with the Mermaid on the Strand third.
